I hope you enjoyed our recent workshop – I certainly enjoyed facilitating it.

Now for the part that separates the winners from the losers – maintaining momentum to a successful implementation!

Any workshop – however enjoyable and insightful ‘on the day’ – will have little or no long-term impact without successful implementation leading to real behavioral change. To get a real return on your investment, your emphasis needs now to be on maintaining the momentum toward successful implementation of what was agreed during the session.

To assist you in this, I have put together my top ten post-workshop success tips:

Own your own success: The only person who can determine what ‘success’ is for you, is you. No-one else who participated in the workshop – not me or your colleagues, not even your manager – can provide you with successful outcomes.

Define your own success: Set out clearly, in one paragraph, what a successful outcome from the workshop looks like for you. This should take no more than 3 to 4 minutes of focussed thought – do it now!

Prioritize two action points: Years of delivering workshops, and coaching participants afterwards, has convinced me that most people set too many goals. Instead of a page or two of good intentions, just two (or at most three) SMART goals [Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Realistic, Time-bound] are much more likely to get implemented.

Put three dates in your schedule: Implementation isn’t going to just happen – you need to plan it. Set three dates – now – when you will review progress against the goals you have set. Put them in your schedule as meetings with yourself, and stick to them.

Get yourself a buddy: Just like working out, going to the gym, keeping to a diet or learning something new, you’ll perform much better if you have someone else accompanying you on the journey. Call another participant on the workshop, print out this page (use the ‘printer-friendly’ link at the top) and work through these points together.

Start a journal: Writing things down is a huge magnifier of success. Trust me: if you resolve to record everything that follows, and keep a written record of progress, you will be far more likely to achieve your goals.

Write down success points: Make a note in your journal of every ‘a-ha’, every successful point of implementation, and all positive behavioral changes that flow from the workshop. You’ll be amazed at the progress you’re making, and reviewing your successes at your review points will be a tremendous stimulus to further success.

Write down reasons for failures: It’s equally important to faithfully record any misunderstandings, confusion, ambiguity and outright failure in application that you encounter. You’re going to learn just as much from what doesn’t work as you will from your successes (see next point).

Finish your journal with two ‘change resolutions’: Choose two learning points about yourself and set clear goals for personal change: What can you do more of, to increase successful implementation in the future? What should you do less of, to avoid failure?
