How to write a truly effective strategic plan

This post is one of a short series on effective strategic planning:

Obviously, in the context of a blog post I can't tell you specifically what should be in your strategic plan (that would require us to spend some time together), but I can show you precisely how to identify what should.

Below is a recording of the class I've taught on effective strategic planning for over 20 years. All the principles are timeless, and most importantly, battle-proven in every environment  - they'll work for you no matter whether you lead a manufacturing or service business, a not-for-profit, a faith- or cause-based organization or even an NGO - I've successfully implemented these precepts in all of these and more.

You'll hear me say some things that go against some of the most firmly help beliefs in how the strategic planning process should work. I can only say that this is because I'm committed to helping leaders like you with what demonstrably does work - not just what 'should' work.

p.s. A signed copy of Predictable Success goes to anyone who can identify the precise year this class was originally recorded using only the time-bound references I make during the recording  - just drop your guess in the comments below, and if you're right, I'll contact you for your mailing address, and the book will wing it's way to you! 🙂

  1. Great contrarian perspective on how to seed yet constrain blue sky discussion while managing torpedos! Sounds like Lost was still playing. 2009?

  2. Hey, Les! I have a follow up question after listening through this. The strategic planning is around what you don’t know you don’t know and the drivers? So is the objectives what supports the drivers and uncovered from the 10 Qs and 5 how-tos?

  3. Well I've been following you a long time and going back over old emails (cough – not a hoarder) I'm wondering about 2014….

  4. I'll be honest… I listened primarily because of the signed book incentive. Somewhere in the 2nd or 3rd track I started taking notes. The result: two pages of notes, fresh motivation for strategic planning for 2022, and the ability to articulate some new key concepts that will immediately help our team. Glad I listened even without guarantee of a prize – the content was definitely worth it. Thanks Les!

But, to take a stab at the giveaway… 2007.

  5. Well, it was definitely recorded pre-COVID with all the references to gathering, social events and offsites! Lost the TV show ran from 2004 to 2010 and there is a reference to Predictable Success which came out 2010. But there is no reference to The Synergist and the types of leader (only to a Torpedo) and that came out 2012, so I'll guess 2011.
